<![CDATA[December 13 - The Rules of the Game]]>Thu, 14 Nov 2024 02:55:30 GMThttp://samgroupil.org/film-discussion-group/december-13-the-rules-of-the-gameWhen: Friday, December 13 at 1:30pm.
Where: Hybrid, with in person at the North Shore Senior Center, 161 Northfield Road, Northfield

On November 8, 15 of our members joined in a lively discussion of The King's Speech, covering both the film itself and the history depicted in the film. Thanks to Marc Rosenberg for selecting the film and for posing though-provoking questions about the film.

Our film for December is The Rules of the Game, a 1939 French film directed by Jean Renoir. The film has been rated as one of the greatest films ever made. It is a scathing critique of corrupt French society cloaked in a comedy of manners in which a weekend at a Marquis' country chateau lays bare some ugly truths about a group of bourgeois acquaintances. The film has had a tumultuous history, Scenes were cut after violent audience responses at a 1939 premier, and the original negative was destroyed during WWII. It finally was reconstructed in 1959.
You should watch the film before our discussion. The Rules of the Game is available at local libraries and can be seen for free through Kanopy if your library is connected with Kanopy. The film can be rented on You Tube, Google Play, Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and Fandango. There do not appear to be any free streaming sources.

We invite all members, whether or not you have previously joined in film group discussions, to join us on December 13.
