What the Madigan Case Tells Us about Illinois justice

Part II: A continuation of last month's Zoom-only discussion of the Mike Madigan bribery case.  The verdict is in. Now we analyze the case as it relates to the broader concept of Illinois justice.  Not to worry if you missed the February meeting. We'll review the highlights of the charges and tabulate the jury breakdown.  The issues were: a) determining whether this was a bribe or not and b) was this a "criminal enterprise" as defined by Illinois statute.  We'll talk about what is a "bribe" and what is a "gratuity." What sentence do you think this 83 year old deserves?

Please RSVP here.

Illinois Speaker Mike Madigan, Corrupt Politician or Mythical Man?

This month's discussion features the Mike Madigan bribery case just recently concluded or still in the hands of the jury.  Based on local news accounts of the evidence submitted, we can share our opinions of the Fed's bribery case vs. his "I did nothing wrong" defense. After we share and compare our thoughts and theories we can try to reach a consensus on the truth of the charges.  After polling our opinions we can, if time allows, conclude by offering our judgment of the case as it relates to the broader concept of Justice: what does this case tell us about we in Illinois accept as just.
